‘Disciplinary proceedings will continue…’ – Gianni Infantino’s statement on Luis Rubiales’ kiss scandal after Women’s World Cup final

It has been more than 12 days since the kiss scandal happened after the final of the Women’s World Cup. Spain won its first-ever title in the Women’s World Cup against England and scripted history. After the match, the Spanish Football President Luis Rubiales kissed the Spanish forward Jenni Hermoso on her lips, which became controversial instantly. Later, a disciplinary committee was formed by the international football body to work on the incident.  

The head of the international football board, Giani Infantino, has finally spoken about the scandal. On his Instagram account, Infantino wrote “The well-deserved celebrations for these magnificent champions were spoiled by what happened after the final whistle. And what continued to happen in the following days. This should never have happened,” and criticized Rubiales.

Infantino talked about the disciplinary body and wrote that the discussions will continue to get the result of the incident. “Federation of International Football Association’s disciplinary bodies immediately assumed their responsibility and took the necessary actions. The disciplinary proceedings will continue their legitimate course,” added Infantino in his statement.   

The international football president felt that women athletes need to be supported. Infantino said that players need to be respected and appreciated for their performances. “On our side, we should continue to focus on how to further support women and women’s football in the future, both on and off the pitch. Upholding true values and respecting the players as people as well as for their fantastic performances” wrote Infantino.  

Rubiales had earlier stated that the kiss between him and Jenni was consensual. Reacting to it, Hermoso denied the statement of the Spanish Football head. “I want to clarify that at no time did I consent to the kiss that he gave me and in no case did I seek to lift the president,” said Hermoso in her statement. The statement from Jenni backfired on the earlier statements given by Rubiales. With the statement of Infantino seeming to be against Rubiales, things look ominous for the Spanish football president.
