The Eliminator game in the Big Bash League (BBL) took place between Sydney Thunder and Brisbane Heat on Friday at Sydney Showground in Sydney. Sydney Thunder won the toss and chose to bowl first. The Brisbane Heat amassed 203-5 in their 20 overs, courtesy of a splendid innings by skipper Usman Khawaja. Josh Brown was dismissed early on in the Heat innings. He went for just 3 off 7 balls. He was caught by McAndrew off the bowling of Chris Green.

Usman Khawaja smashed 94 off 55 balls with 10 fours and three sixes. The finishing touch was provided by Marnus Labuschagne who made a wonderful 73 off 48 balls with seven fours and two sixes. Chris Green took the catch off Daniel Sams bowling to get him out, and it was a stunner.

The match had a brilliant piece of fielding in the penultimate ball off the 19th over which involved the skipper of the Thunder Chris Green. Sams bowled a full-length ball outside the off-stump. Labuschagne reaches out to the ball and gets the toe end of his bat. The ball goes down the ground and into the air, Green who was stationed at long-on moved swiftly to his left and dived at full stretch to take the catch.

Rain plays spoilsport in the Eliminator

Green was the best of the bowlers as he picked up 2-29 in his four overs. In the second innings, David Warner made an unbeaten 36 off 20 balls with five fours. Gikes scored 3 off 8. He was dismissed by Mark Kuhemann off the bowling of Bazley. Jason Sangha was unbeaten on 9 off 13 balls with one four. At the last ball of the sixth over, the rain came down hard and the players walked off.

When this happened, the Thunder were 8 runs behind on the Duckworth Lewis method and so the Heat earned an eight-run win and made their way into the knockout game against the Melbourne Renegades. For the Thunder, their topsy-turvy BBL campaign in 2022-23 has come to an end.
