Team India were not able to win their maiden World Test Championship title at the Oval. They lost to Australia by a big margin of 209 runs. Australia were better than India when it came to all departments are they proceeded to lift their first WTC title. India could not get momentum back in the game even after they reduced Australia to 76-3 at one stage in the first innings. When India collapsed to 234 after they were 179-3 in the second innings, a lot of scathing comments were said.

“People had a misconception that under Rohit Sharma India will win world events. I don’t see India qualifying for semifinals in ODI World Cup under him.” Shastri said after India’s loss to Australia. Notably Shastri was the coach of the Indian team when India won back-to-back tours in Australia against Australia in 2018 and 2021. India had also beaten Australia at home recently in March when the two sides played at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

If they needed extra days to prepare for the World Test Championship final, then they should have missed a few IPL games -Ravi Shastri

Shastri further elaborated that India had missed a trick with regards to their preparations in the WTC final. He opined that India had to come to England early and prepare for the big clash so that they could put their best foot forward and get acclimatised to the conditions. At the post-match presentation, Rohit Sharma had also pointed out that he would have ideally liked 20-25 days of preparation leading up to the WTC final.

Shastri said if the players needed extra time to prepare for the WTC final then the Indian players would have had to miss a few IPL games. “That’s never going to happen. Let’s be realistic. You’re going to get 20 days, but if that’s the case, you got to miss the IPL. The choice is yours (players),” Shastri said on Star Sports.

Shastri further reiterated that the Indian Cricket Board needed to review the situation going forward. “It’s up to the establishment as well. I’m sure the Indian Cricket Board is going to review this in the future. If the WTC Final is going to come after the IPL, in month of June, for that season, if your team qualifies for the final, there should be certain clauses put in for the franchises,”
