In a recent development, Apex Cricket Council imposed hefty fines on England and Australia for maintaining a slow over-rate during the first Test of Ashes 2023. Australia who beat England by 2 wickets at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham was fined 40 per cent of match fees and docked two points in WTC 2023-25 cycle.

Meanwhile, England was also charged the same and they registered -2 points for maintaining a slow over rate. With this penalty, England has started this WTC cycle with -2 points on the table while despite winning the game Australia has just 10 points in the ongoing cycle. Andy Pycroft, the match referee, imposed the sanctions after both teams were deemed to be two overs short of their targets when time allowances were taken into account. The fines were accepted by Australia skipper Pat Cummins and England rival Ben Stokes, eliminating the need for formal hearings.

It’s worth noting that, Australia beat India in the recently concluded World Test Championship finals by 209 runs to become World Champions. Pat Cummins-led team is on a mission as they outplayed India and now England in their backyard to register a 1-0 lead in five-match series. Notably, both India and Australia were penalized for maintaining a slow over-rate during the WTC finals too.

Pat Cummins scripted a dramatic finish for Australia

Talking about the game, Australia started their chase in the second session after rain washed out the first session. Australia was looking good to get the game before Ollie Robinson and Ben Stokes dismissed Cameron Green and Usman Khawaja in quick succession. After their departure, Australia skipper Pat Cummins along with Alex Carey added 18 runs for the eighth wicket. Soon Carey also got trapped by Joe Root for 20 runs off 50 balls with the help of two boundaries.

However, this didn’t stop Cummins from playing an invincible innings. Cummins scored unbeaten 44 runs and added 55 runs for the ninth wicket with Nathan Lyon. Both took the game away from England and scripted a historic victory for the visitors. The second Test of the series will start on 28th June at Lord’s in London.
