Devon Conway, the stylish left-handed batsman from New Zealand, has quickly become a prominent member of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since he arrived in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2022. In just two seasons, he has established himself as a reliable top-order batsman and a key cog in CSK’s batting line-up.
Conway‘s IPL journey began in 2022 when he was bought by CSK for a steal at Rs 1 crore. He went on to impress everyone with his elegant stroke-making and composure at the crease. He finished his debut season with 252 runs in just 7 games, at an average of 42 and a strike rate of 145.66, including three half-centuries.
Then in the 2023 IPL season, Conway took his game to a whole new level. He smashed 672 runs at an average of 51.69 and a strike rate of 139.71. He scored six half-centuries, showcasing his ability to play both anchor and aggressor roles. His partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad at the top of the order provided CSK with a solid foundation in many matches.

Conway’s success in the IPL can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, his temperament allows him to remain calm and composed under pressure, and he rarely gets flustered in tense situations. Secondly, his technique is near-perfect, and he has a wide range of strokes at his disposal. He can play the ball on both sides of the wicket, and he is adept at hitting boundaries against both pace and spin. The CSK fan’s excitement instantly skyrocketed. “Macha,” meaning “brother” in South India, resonated deeply with the supporter, forging a sudden connection. Emboldened, the fan exclaimed “Whistle Podu,” the iconic CSK slogan. To the delight of the fan and the wider CSK fandom, Conway readily returned the chant with an enthusiastic “Whistle Podu!”
