High-flying Rajasthan Royals battled it out with the Chennai Super Kings at the iconic Chepauk stadium on Wednesday. Chennai came into the match on the back of a convincing win in the El Clasico of the Indian Premier League against Mumbai Indians. While, on the other hand, Rajasthan Royals also had a convincing win over their neighbours Delhi Capitals in their last game.

Chennai won the toss and opted to field first in a game that both the teams were hopeful of winning. The fiery young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal got out early and Devdutt Padikkal then formed a crucial partnership with the in-form Jos Butler. The duo added 77 for the second wicket before two quick wickets of Padikkal and skipper Sanju Samson meant that Chennai were crawling back in the game.

Ravichandran Ashwin was given another surprise promotion and the duo of Butler and Ashwin added another 47 runs before the latter was dismissed. Late flurry from Hetmyer meant that Rajasthan finished at a decent score of 175/8 after 20 overs. Tushar Deshpande, Akash Singh and Ravindra Jadeja were the pick of the bowlers, as they contributed a total of 6 wickets in their combined twelve overs.

The in-form youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad departed early for a score of 8 but last match’s hero Ajinkya Rahane joined Devon Conway at the crease. The duo made a vital partnership of 68 runs before the former was dismissed by Ashwin. Shivam Dube’s stay also didn’t last long and Chennai was in a pickle. Zampa then scalped the wicket of Moeen Ali to put more salt to the fire. The crowd and the equation was Dhoni-esque but Rayudu joined the equation.

Two more quick wickets of impact player Ambati Rayudu and set batter Devon Conway meant former captain Ravindra Jadeja had to join the crease along with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. They needed 59 off the last four overs which was a tough task but two of the toughest people of the team were at the crease.

The duo took the game close as Jadeja hit two massive sixes in the penultimate over to get the game close. 21 required off the final over with Dhoni on strike, even though he hit two sixes, he and Chennai fell short by four runs. Rajasthan Royals won a close game and moved further ahead in the Indian Premier League standings.
