Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the Lakshadweep Islands, has stirred unexpected controversy, creating choppy waters in the typically calm India-Maldives relationship. Derogatory remarks on social media by some Maldivian politicians targeting PM Modi and comparing the tourism potential of Lakshadweep with the Maldives ignited the spark.

These comments, now deleted, included terms like “clown” and “puppet,” creating a diplomatic headache. India expressed its displeasure through official channels, while social media in India saw a surge of nationalist sentiment. Calls for boycotting the Maldives by Indian tourists added fuel to the fire.

Several ex-cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Suresh Raina and Venkatesh Prasad, have also come forward to condemn the comments made by Maldivian officials.

“Before going out, I would like to explore…”

Adding a surprising twist to the narrative, a video of MS Dhoni has surfaced, in which he reveals his travel aspirations. Contrary to expectations, the Indian cricket star declared his top travel destination was none other than his own country. Citing the vast diversity, from Himalayan peaks to sun-kissed beaches, Kohli expressed a deep desire to explore India first, before heading to overseas destinations.

“Mostly, I do travel a lot but not for vacations. Frankly, if you ask me, I have not been on a lot of vacations. During my cricket playing time, mostly I would go to nations where cricket was there. I haven’t seen a lot because I was like, I have come here to play cricket, I will play cricket and come back. So, not a lot of fun that way. My wife loves to travel. So, now we plan that when we get some time off, we want to travel. But we want to start from India. We have so many beautiful places over here. I would like to explore them first before heading to different places,” he said.

While the India-Maldives spat undeniably casts a shadow, the cricketers’ response and MSD’s patriotism offer a refreshing perspective. Their actions highlight the importance of respect and the immense beauty often overlooked within our borders.
