Mohammed Shami was not a part of India’s World Cup plans until the last minute when the management felt the need of an experienced bowler to replace the injured Jasprit Bumrah. Hence, Shami was brought in on the pretext of hope rather than his skills. He did quite a reasonable job to ensure that India didn’t feel the pinch of Bumrah’s absence. However, in the big semi-final clash against England, he was taken to the cleaners by Jos Buttler and Alex Hales.
In Shami’s defense, all the bowlers had an off day which allowed for the Englishmen to romp home by 10 wickets. Post the T20 World Cup, Shami wasn’t picked for any T20I games, probably to safeguard him for Tests and ODIs. Shami will soon be seen in the IPL and a good performance could bring him back in contention for the upcoming T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA.
