Shai Hope credits MS Dhoni for match-winning century vs England

West Indies, under Shai Hope, are looking to rebuild in the ODI format.

In the first ODI between England and West Indies, which was held at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, the hosts emerged victorious by 4 wickets, chasing down a total of 325 with 7 deliveries still in the bank. The star of the show was the captain, Shai Hope, who smashed a magnificent 83-ball 109, his 16th hundred in one-day internationals.

Shai Hope’s innings, laced with seven sixes and four boundaries was masterful. His calm and composed performance at the crease, coupled with significant contributions from Alick Athanaze, Brandon King, Shimron Hetmyer, and Romario Shephard, left the English bowlers baffled and unable to find an answer to his explosive batting.

Earlier, England had compiled a good score of 325 on the back of a 71-run knock by Harry Brook and contributions by Phil Salt, Zak Crawley, Sam Curran and Brydon Carse.

“I had a chat with MS Dhoni…” – Shai Hope

Citing a conversation with Indian cricket legend MS Dhoni, West Indies batsman Nicholas Hope revealed that Dhoni’s advice about a batter having more time than they think proved instrumental in his performance. Hope shared this insight during his post-match interaction with the host broadcaster. Dhoni’s words resonated with Hope and played a significant role in his approach to the game. “It was in a winning cause and that’s all I play for. Happy that we won. I had a chat with MS Dhoni some time back and he told me that you always have a lot more time at the crease than you think and that stuck with me,” Hope said. Much like Dhoni used to do for India, Hope took the game deep and finished it, taking the team across the line.

MS Dhoni will soon be seen in action during the Indian Premier League. He will once again don the yellow jersey of the Chennai Super Kings and will most probably lead the side as they look to defend the title that they won this year. Fans are genuinely excited for the IPL to kick off so that they can see the great man on the field. Meanwhile, the second ODI of the series will be held on the same ground on Wednesday, December 6.
