In ODI World Cup 2023, Jos Buttler’s England has had a forgettable campaign, managing only one win in six matches. With their semi-final hopes all but extinguished, England now eyes the role of potential party spoilers as they prepare to take on Pakistan this Saturday. Wasim Akram, Pakistan’s legendary former pacer, expressed his concerns about the resurgent English side in a recent interview.

While Pakistan registered a much-needed win against Bangladesh on Tuesday, their journey to the semi-finals is still fraught with uncertainty. The victory over Bangladesh marked the sixth consecutive loss for the latter, leading to their early exit from the tournament, becoming the first team to be officially eliminated from the 10-team global competition. In contrast, Pakistan’s semi-final aspirations depend on a series of favourable outcomes, including their performances in the upcoming matches against England and New Zealand.

During an appearance on ‘The Pavilion’ show on A Sports, Wasim Akram shared his thoughts on the current scenario, saying, “England will be upbeat as they have nothing to lose in the tournament now.” The English side, having been eliminated from semi-final contention, is expected to adopt a fearless and aggressive approach, intending to disrupt the plans of their opponents.

Can England play a spoiler? Wasim Akram worries for Pakistan!

Akram emphasized the importance of focusing on Pakistan’s performance, stating, “Pakistan can only do one thing. They just have to win their games and then hope and pray that other teams provide favourable results. Because those things aren’t in your control. If New Zealand loses by a big margin, again, that’s not in Pakistan’s control. They should focus on their cricket. The next two games, against big teams.”

As Pakistan faces both England and New Zealand in their remaining group-stage matches, the pressure to secure wins and secure the coveted semi-final spot is mounting. Wasim Akram, however, remains concerned about the English side, saying, “I’m scared of England because they are out.  England are going to play fearless cricket. They have nothing to lose. They will be aggressive and will intend to spoil someone’s party.”

Before locking horns with England, Pakistan will face New Zealand on November 4 in a crucial group-stage clash in Bengaluru. Cricket fans worldwide eagerly await the outcome of these high-stakes encounters as the 2023 World Cup reaches its climax.
