Just one day before the match India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj stated that England’s much-hyped ‘Bazball’ tactic would not work in Indian conditions, and if the visitors take an aggressive attitude, the match might be over in two days. As the sub-continent conditions are different. The wickets provide turn and bounce to the bowlers.

After England was bowled out for 246 in the first innings, India was able to build a commanding lead of 190. However, the majority of the batters failed to capitalize on their opportunities and scored a hundred. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma, and Shreyas Iyer all took big shots and ended up throwing away their wickets.

England dominates India on Day 4

England recovered admirably in the second innings, setting India a 230-run chase due to a stunning 196 from Ollie Pope. On Day 4 when India started to chase the target of 231 the India team continued to lose wickets in quick succession. Srikar Bharat and Ravichandran Ashwin offered some optimism with a 53-run combination for the eighth wicket, but England’s breakthrough came from debutant Tom Hartley, who took seven wickets in the second innings.

When England needed just one wicket to win the first Test match against India in the 5-match Test series, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah demonstrated their tenacity and exceptional character. The duo scored 25 runs off 37 balls for the final wicket, delaying England’s win by six overs.

Mohammed Siraj showed strong intent even when India required more than 50 runs with only one wicket in hand. He went wild on spinning. He plunged on every other delivery, which finally contributed to his removal when Tom Hartley produced a superbly tossed-up ball that lured him and sent him dancing down the wicket, missing the ball’s line. Ben Foakes, the wicketkeeper, grabbed the ball and stumped him. He was well away from the crease and as a result, England won the first Test match by 28 runs against India.
