Today, Rajkot witnessed a dream come true for 26-year-old Sarfaraz Khan as he donned the coveted Test cap for India against England in the 3rd Test of the 5-match series. This debut was especially emotional, not just for Khan but also for his teary-eyed father who witnessed his son’s lifelong dream materialize. The crowd, too, erupted in cheers, acknowledging the talent they had been eagerly waiting to see on the biggest stage.

The highly anticipated debut saw him deliver a captivating performance, smashing a fluent 62 runs off just 66 balls. His innings exuded confidence and flair, showcasing the stroke-making prowess that had garnered him immense attention in domestic cricket. He didn’t seem fazed by the occasion, peppering the boundary with some exquisite shots. However, he fell to a needless run-out.

It happened when Jadeja was 99 and itching to get to his century. Off the last delivery of the 82nd over, Jadeja drove James Anderson’s delivery to mid-on and charged for a single. Sarfaraz obliged but Jadeja pulled out which left the former nowhere. A direct hit by Mark Wood brought about the end of a fine innings by Sarfaraz on debut. Despite falling short of a century, his knock left a lasting impression, hinting at a promising future for whites.

“It was my wrong call”: Ravindra Jadeja on realising his mistake

Post the end of the day’s play, Ravindra Jadeja took to Instagram to acknowledge his mistake which led to the unfortunate dismissal of the debutant. “Feeling bad for @sarfarazkhan97. It was my wrong call, Well played,” he wrote.

However, despite his apology, Jadeja was not spared by fans as they bashed him for his tentativeness which denied Sarfaraz what would have been one of the best centuries on Test debut. They also pointed out the fact that Jadeja needs to work on his calling as he has been involved in plenty of run-outs with the most notable one being the run-out of Hardik Pandya in the Final of the 2017 Champions Trophy.
