England completed one of their finest-ever away victories, shocking India with a 28-run triumph in a thrilling end to the first Test in Hyderabad. Inspired by one of the all-time great innings by Ollie Pope and a bewitching 7-62 from rookie spinner Tom Hartley, England set India 231 to win before thrashing the hosts for 202 in the last over of the extra half-hour on the fourth day.

To beat a team that had lost only three of their previous 46 home Tests is extraordinary in and of itself, but England did it with a largely inexperienced attack and veteran spinner Jack Leach out due to injury. England overcame a 190-run deficit in the first innings to win, a feat achieved only twice previously in Test history. India has never lost a home Test with a lead of more than 100 runs.

England dominates India at home

After England began on 316-6, Pope scored 196 runs before getting out to Bumrah, the greatest second-innings score ever scored by an English batter in India. The visitors were bowled out for 420 on the stroke of lunchtime.

Even on a worn-out surface, India should have been able to reach the target, but it looks like India gave up. England were headed by the outstanding Hartley, who also scored 34 runs. A 4-24 collapse gutted India’s middle order and drove home fans to silence. With India on the verge of defeat, KS Bharat and Ravichandran Ashwin made a partnership of 78 runs which restored public faith. India had momentum till Hartley bowled Bharat with a beauty.

With the extra time, the shadows began to close in. Ashwin danced past Hartley to be stumped, but India was not beaten. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj scored 25 for the final wicket before Siraj was stumped off Hartley, sparking loud celebrations in England.
