The Match 32 of the Hundred’s 2022 saw Manchester Originals lock horns with Oval Invincibles. It was a virtual qualifier with the winner booking the berth for the next round. The Invincibles skipper Sam Billings won the toss and elected to bat first at Old Trafford.
The Invincibles promoted Rilee Rossouw up the order to open with Will Jacks. However, this move did not pay off as the duo got out in quick time. The Billings & Co. had lost their top three with 20 balls and were in a spot of bother. The skipper and Sam Curran led their team’s fightback with a half-century stand before the latter departed.
Billings played a captain knock for his well-made 53 but got out trying to up the ante. The Originals bowlers were quite good at the death, especially Joshua Little. The Originals restricted the Invincibles to a par-total of 143. Joshua Little had an incredible outing with the ball as he took a fifer.
In response, the Manchester side had a solid start but the Invincibles struck back with the wicket of skipper Laurie Evans. The man-in form Philip Salt was also sent packing and the match was evenly poised. Wayne Madsen raised to the occasion and kept the opposition bowlers at bay. The Billings & Co struck their way back with the wicket of Tristan Stubbs.
Ashton Turner joined hands with Madsen to carry their team close to the target. Turner was run out at a crucial interval with 13 required off 8 balls. The Invincibles stretched the game to the final five deliveries. 11 was required of the final set and Paul Walter held his nerve to get his side home in the penultimate ball.
The Evans & Co won the match by six wickets and book a ticket to the eliminator. Madsen top-scored with an unbeaten 53 runs. Little was adjudged the hero of the match for his sensational bowling. The Manchester Originals will face Eoin Morgan’s London Spirit on Friday.
