The Indian Cricket Team will have to forgo 100% of their match fee in the form of fines which were imposed on them by the Cricket Governing Body. This happened after they were found guilty of maintaining slow overrate in the World Test Championship (WTC) final which was held at the Oval. Meanwhile, Australia the winners of the 2021-23 WTC cycle also had to cough up 80 percent of their match fees for the same offence.

The sanctions were imposed by the match referee Richie Richardson who was appointed by the Cricket Governing Body after India were found to five overs short of the required target. When time allowances were taken into account, Australia were also found wanting as they were four overs short.

Both captains accepted the sanctions –   Cricket Governing Body

According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which talks about minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. “Captains Rohit Sharma and Pat Cummins pled guilty and accepted the proposed sanctions, so there was no need for formal hearings,” Cricket Governing Body said in a press release on Monday.

The WTC final went till the first session of the fifth day when India folded up for 234 in the first session itself. The match started on a good note for India when they reduced Australia to 76-3. Then Steve Smith and Travis Head scored a 285 runs partnership to give Australia the ascendancy. Big runs from the duo helped Australia made a huge first innings score of 469. India did not fare well with the bat in the first innings as they made only 296.

This gave Australia a 173-run lead and the Kangaroos scored vital runs in the second innings to declare at 270-8. Australia set a mammoth target of 444 for India to win. The Indian batting put up a very disappointing performance in the second innings to hand Australia their first WTC title.
