On 4 September 2023, India locked horns with Nepal in the ongoing Asia Cup in Pallekele. After winning the toss, Rohit Sharma asked Nepal to bat first. It was a must-win clash for both teams as they were looking to seal a spot in the ‘Super 4’ stage.

After the toss, Rohit said: “We are gonna bowl first. No particular reason.” He also confirmed that the team made only one change. Mohammed Shami came in place of Jasprit Bumrah as he needed to get back to Mumbai for the birth of his first child. But, Team India fielders had an ordinary day on the field and that left fans and Rohit shocked.

Nepal scored 230 runs in 48.2 overs against India

Within the first five overs, three catches got dropped and Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, and Virat Kohli made those mistakes. On the first delivery of the second over, Siraj created a chance as it was a very easy chance for the former Team India skipper at short cover. But, it seemed that it was quite a casual effort from him as he got into an awkward side-on position and dropped it. But, Kohli managed to grab a one-handed stunner on the fifth delivery of the 30th over. Again it was Siraj and his RC teammate, did not make a mistake this time.

Kohli moved to his right, leapt up, stretched a hand out over his head and came up with a good grab. Speaking of Nepal’s innings, they got bundled out for 230 runs in 48.2 overs. For India, both Mohammed Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each. While Mohammed Shami, Shardul Thakur, and Hardik Pandya grabbed one wicket each. Kuldeep Yadav was the lone bowler who went wicketless. For Nepal, Aasif Sheikh was the highest scorer with 58 runs off 97 balls, including eight fours. Along with him, Sompal Kami scored 48 runs off 56 balls, including one four and two sixes.
