On the morning of Day 3 at Ahmedabad, there was a decision that caused visible confusion among the Australians. Nathan Lyon and Steve Smith were left astonished when a decision did not go the way of the Australians. There was clear evidence that meant Gill was not out but Australia still wanted to contest the decision.

The incident took place in the 18th over. After Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had got India off to a steady start, Lyon put the ball on the fourth stump line and it looked like a close impact between bat and pad. Australia went for the review. The impact was pad first, but since, it was outside off-stump, Gill was given not out.

However, what caused doubt was the fact that despite the impact being off by ‘three metres, the TV umpire opted to go for the ball tracker, which showed that it would have gone on to hit the leg-stump. Nevertheless, Kettleborough stayed with his decision and signaled not out, but his stance left Lyon and Smith baffled.

The incident happened on Day 3 in the Indian innings at Ahmedabad

Lyon stood transfixed and debated about the umpire’s decision. Kettleborough was repeatedly indicating that the ball was going down the leg side. He indicated that the ball was missing the leg stump.

The camera then pointed towards Steve Smith, who could be heard yelling, ‘WHAT?’ on the stump mic as he too was left dazzled by what had happened. After a brief delay, once the matter was put to rest, the match went on.

The conditions at Ahmedabad were the best to bat on in the series. India were led by the heroics of Gill, who scored 128 off 235 balls with 12 fours and one six. Cheteshwar Pujara made 42 off 121 balls with three fours. Rohit scored 35 off 58 balls, including three fours and one six. Australia had scored 480 in the first innings, earlier.

Usman Khawaja starred for Australia with the bat as he scored 180 off 422 balls with 21 fours. Cameron Green also played a valuable knock of 114 runs off 170 balls with 18 fours. This was Green’s maiden Test hundred. Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy also scored runs to help Australia to a massive total.
