Pakistan and New Zealand faced off in the ODIs once again after drawing the two-match Test series 0-0. Karachi had also played host to the two Tests in Pakistan. New Zealand will be looking to use the matches against Pakistan as a preparation for the 50-over World Cup in India.
Pakistan won the toss and opted to bowl. Devon Conway was the first to go as he was bowled by a leg-stump yorker in the sixth ball of the first over by Naseem Shah. Then Finn Allen played a cameo of 29 off 27 balls with six fours before he was dismissed by Mohammad Wasim Jr.
Kane Williamson flattered to device in his short innings of 26 off 39 balls with three fours. Then Daryl Mitchell came in and looked to steady the ship to counter the fall of early wickets. He scored 36 off 55 with one four, before he was dismissed by Mohammad Nawaz.
The Pakistan bowler bowled a beauty to Mitchell. He bowled a lovely ball with delicious flight and got Mitchell cleaned up. He bowled the ball at the middle and off-stump and then turned away to sneak past the outside edge to dislodge the off-stump. It was a classic left-armers dismissal by Mohammad Nawaz.
Michael Bracewell was the top scorer for New Zealand with 43
Tom Latham who is donning the gloves for New Zealand and is good against spin played a measured inning of 42 off 52 balls with three fours before he was dismissed by Usama Mir.
Just when it seemed that New Zealand would get struck into a hole, Glenn Philips and Michael Bracewell made some vital runs 37 and 43 respectively to give the Kiwis a fighting chance. Mitchell Santner contributed lower down the order with 21 off 18 with three fours. Tim Southee made 15 off 11 with one four. At the end of 50 overs, New Zealand somehow huffed and puffed to reach 255-9.
For Pakistan, Usama Mir picked up 2-42 in his 10 overs. Nawaz picked up 1-38 in his 10 overs. Naseem picked up 5-57 in his ten overs. Three ODIs will be played between the two sides.
