Pakistan and South Africa locked horns in the 36th match of the 20-20 World Cup 2022 at Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday. Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and elected to bat first. During the first innings of the match, a bizarre dismissal involving Pakistan batter Mohammad Nawaz has been going viral all over the internet.

The incident took place in the 13th over of the innings bowled by Tabraiz Shamsi. Nawaz tried to sweep Shamsi but the ball ended up taking the inside edge and hit him on his pads. Seeing the ball hit the pads, Shamsi appealed for LBW and the umpire gave him out straight away.

Unaware that the umpire had raised his finger, Nawaz attempted to take a run but his call was turned down by his batting partner Iftikhar Ahmed. Nawaz, who was halfway through the pitch, quickly turned back to return to the striker’s end, but it was too late as Lungi Ngidi and Quinton De Kock had completed a run-out.

Seeing the umpire raising his finger, Nawaz began walking back to the pavilion thinking that he’s been given run-out. However, the umpire had given him lbw and had Nawaz gone for a review, he would’ve been saved as he edged the ball before it hit his pads. According to the laws, the ball is dead once the umpire raises his finger and the direct hit happened only after he was given out on-field which means the run-out wouldn’t have stood had he reviewed the umpire’s decision.

Unaware of the entire scenario, Nawaz began walking back towards the pavilion leaving everyone confused. Pakistan were reduced to 43/4 before Nawaz and Iftikhar Ahmed forged a 51-run partnership to stabilise the Pakistan innings. Nawaz was dismissed after scoring 28 off 22 balls.

Pakistan managed to score 185/9 at the end of their allotted 20 overs courtesy of half-centuries from Iftikhar Ahmed and Shadab Khan. Iftikhar scored 51 off 35 balls with the help of three fours and two sixes while Shadab scored a blistering 52 off 22 balls smashing three fours and four gigantic sixes in his innings.

Meanwhile, Twitter was abuzz as fans poured their reactions on Nawaz’s bizarre dismissal. Here are some of the best Tweets:
