India ended the first session of the World Test Championship final with their noses slightly in front, having seen the back of the dangerous David Warner for 43 off 60 balls with eight fours. The left-hander looked like a man on a mission to prove a big statement to India that he could score in the big game. The left-hander was batting beautifully and struck eight hits to the fence in his quickfire knock.

The dismissal happened at the fourth ball of the 21st over. It was a ball from Shardul Thakur that was short and angling down the leg side. Warner was looking to help the ball on its way, he did not go hard on the pull. It looked like he was a bit late to play the shot. The left-hander wanted to guide it down to the long leg, but a thin edge was found and Srikar Bharat caught the ball beautifully by moving swiftly to his left side to see the end of Warner.

Usman Khawaja was Australia’s first wicket to fall in the opening session

It was a fine innings from Warnerm but he would not be pleased with the way he got out as it was a very innocuous ball to get out to. If he would have stayed on, he would have definitely got a big score. India started off the big game on the right note by winning the toss and electing to bowl first. On an Oval pitch that had bounce, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj bowled probing lines and lengths that kept Australia on their toes.

In an early setback for the Kangaroos, Siraj bowled an absolute jaffa to send Usman Khawaja for a nought of 10 balls. The fast bowlers were in the game early due to the bounce on offer. India lost the last WTC final which was held at Edgbaston against New Zealand in 2021. India and Australia came into this game as the number two and number one ranked side respectively. Australia went into the lunch break at 73-2.
