South Africa were sent out to bat first by Australian skipper Pat Cummins after winning the toss. They got off to a decent start, as Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock kept an eye on the ball while it was swinging and seaming, and they pounced when it stopped.

Even though Bavuma appeared scratchy, they established a 100-run opening stand. Maxwell was the one to eventually end the stand as Bavuma tried to go big. Rassie Van van Dussen contributed a few, but de Kock’s additional century made him the centerpiece of the show. A rejuvenated Aiden Markram and Henrich Klaasen went out and smashed the ball around in order to keep the runs coming as de Kock wore down in the scorching weather. When Markram mentioned fifty, it appeared that South Africa would surpass 300 in total.

But Australia, driven by both Pat Cummins and Josh Hazelwood, expertly turned the tide. They bowled accurate overs and removed both Markram and Klaasen. South Africa finished with a respectable total of 311 runs on a tricky Lucknow pitch.

South Africa inflict heavy loss on five-time champions Australia

The new ball nicked about, making it impossible for the Australian openers to get going. Marsh became the first to depart, and Warner soon after. That was only the beginning of the umpiring rulings that will certainly be dissected in the days that follow. Steve Smith was left absolutely perplexed as South Africa successfully reviewed and successfully had an LBW shout overturned.

While the circumstances favoured the bowlers, South Africa was unrelenting and made the most of them.  They added three more wickets during the subsequent seven overs, leaving Australia in trouble at 70-6. By the time Australia abandoned the chase to preserve their NRR, the match was already finished.

Despite having a useful combination that kept them going, Labuschagne and Starc finally bungled their way to 177. South African bowlers finished the job as they won against the five-time winners by a massive 134 runs. South Africa won big because they fulfilled several criteria tonight.
