Team India’s campaign in the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 has been off to a fantastic start, with the team remaining undefeated and leading the points table with an impressive Net Run Rate of +1.353. However, a cloud of uncertainty now looms over the participation of vice-captain Hardik Pandya due to a recent injury.

Hardik Pandya’s World Cup journey took an unexpected turn when he sustained a Grade 1 ligament tear in his ankle while fielding off his bowling during a match against Bangladesh in Pune. This injury forced him to sit out of the subsequent game against New Zealand in Dharamsala. Initially, it was believed to be a minor issue, but recent reports indicate a potentially more significant concern.

According to sources, Hardik’s ankle injury might be more severe than initially thought, with a suspected Grade 1 ligament tear. This type of injury typically requires at least two weeks for recovery. The National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru is currently overseeing his rehabilitation. The medical team has informed the team management that they are hopeful of getting him back on the field, and they are opting not to bring in a replacement at this point.

The current situation suggests that a decision regarding Hardik Pandya’s involvement in the remainder of the tournament will be made next week. Due to the delicate nature of his injury, his return to play must be carefully managed. It’s worth noting that his recovery process might be lengthier than that of other players who have more substantial muscle mass as compared to Hardik.

Hardik Pandya’s ankle injury: what it means for Team India

If necessary, Hardik Pandya is reportedly prepared to take injections to aid in his recovery and make himself available for the crucial stages of the tournament. However, even if he can’t bowl at full capacity, the team management seems willing to accommodate his presence in the playing XI, recognizing his all-round capabilities.

As it stands, it seems highly likely that Hardik Pandya will miss the upcoming clash against England, scheduled for October 29 in Lucknow. Reports also suggest that he may be absent for the games against Sri Lanka and South Africa in early November.

In his absence, Team India made adjustments for the New Zealand match, bringing in Mohammed Shami and Suryakumar Yadav to the playing XI. This decision proved beneficial as Shami delivered a remarkable five-wicket performance. Shami is expected to maintain his place in the XI, ensuring that the team maintains its winning momentum despite the absence of their star all-rounder.

It’s worth noting that while Pandya’s absence from the England game has been reported, it’s not a grave concern. According to a BCCI official, this precautionary measure is being taken to prioritize Pandya’s well-being rather than due to a serious, career-threatening issue.

As cricket enthusiasts anxiously await Hardik Pandya’s return to the field, Team India continues its quest for World Cup glory, demonstrating their resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity.
