‘Sahi lollipop mila hai Pakistan ko’ -Fans react as Asia Cup via hybrid model is set to start on August 31

There is big news from the Asian front as the 2023 edition of the Asia Cup will be held between August 31 to September 17. It will be held in ODI format and will serve as preparation for the 50 over World Cup later this year in India. There was a lot of uncertainty over Pakistan’s Asia Cup participation, but it has been cleared because of the approval of the hybrid model.

The hosting of the tournament will be shared as follows. Pakistan will host four games while the remaining fixtures will be held in Sri Lanka. India also had its way as the Men in Blue will not be travelling to Pakistan. All of India’s matches will take place in the island nation. Sri Lanka will host nine matches in the multilateral tournament. The format will be the same as the 2022 edition. a group stage followed by Super 4 and then the two teams who finish top of Super 4 will play in the final.

“We are delighted to announce that the Asia Cup 2023 will be held from 31st August to 17th September 2023 and will see the elite teams from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Nepal, compete in a total of 13 exciting ODI matches,” The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) release read. “The tournament will be hosted in a hybrid model with four matches being held in Pakistan, and the remaining nine matches being played in Sri Lanka,” The statement said.

In one group, India, Pakistan and Nepal were put together. While in the other group will feature Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. 13 matches will be played in 13 days across two venues in the tournament. There is a possibility of India and Pakistan going head-to-head thrice in the tournament. The last time the Asia Cup was played in the 50-over format was in 2018 in the United Arab Emirates where India became champions.

After a lot of uncertainty about the status of the tournament, it has been finally put underway due to great efforts by the ACC. The official digital broadcaster for the Asia Cup had issued a statement saying that it will allow free streaming for the tournament in mobile devices.
