In an important development to the 2023 Asia Cup, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have rejected the Hybrid Model of Pakistan for Asia Cup 2023. This is according to a report. Due to this happening, it is likely that the continental tournament slated to be held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan might have to endure the torture of the uncertain stormy seas. The 2022 edition of the Asia Cup was held in the United Arab Emirates.
Pakistan were given the hosting rights for the 2023 edition. But things took a strong turn as India refused to play in Pakistan citing the refusal of government clearance. Jay Shah the president of the Asian Cricket Council was all for having the Asia Cup anywhere else other than Pakistan. Shah has also been wanting the support of other nations for it to happen. From Pakistan’s point of view, they were keen to retain the hosting rights and asked India whether they would okay the hybrid model.

In the end, it did not transpire. Due to this, the bilateral relations between Pakistan and Sri Lanka have been affected. The Pakistan Cricket Board is very angry with Sri Lankan Cricket for throwing its hat in the ring for hosting Asia Cup 2023. And as a consequence, Pakistan have declined to play the bilateral ODI series which was slated to happen in June.
“An example of the increasingly strained relations between the two boards emerged after the PCB turned down a proposal by the Lankans to play a few One-Day International matches next month in Sri Lanka,” A PCB source said. “It is a clear indication that the PCB is not happy with the Sri Lankan board stepping in to offer to host the Asia Cup in September when it is Pakistan’s turn to host the regional event at home.” The PCB source added.
If the Asia Cup takes place, then it will be held in the 50-over format ahead of the ODI World Cup in India. The last time the Asia Cup was hosted in the ODI format took place in the UAE in 2018.
