Sachithra Senanyake arrested over match fixing charges in Lanka Premier League

In ODI's the former off spinner picked up 53 wickets.

Sachithra Senanayake landed himself in a pickle yet again as he was put behind bars on Wednesday on suspicion and charges over match-fixing that took place in the Lanka Premier League. A Court in Colombo had earlier barred him from travelling out of the country three weeks back. The arrest took place after the off-spinner submitted himself to the authorities following match-fixing charges.

The charges stated that he was caught attempting to fix games and also using a telephone connection for that purpose. The Telephone connection was from Dubai and he was also revealing plans of fixing games to two other players. Senanayake was accused of trying to fix games in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) for the 2020 season, where he allegedly pushed two players into fixing games. The former off-spinner represented Sri Lanka in ODI and T20 cricket. He played 49 ODIs and 24 T20Is for the national side.

The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has ordered the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration to put a three-month travel ban with immediate effect. The Court was informed that the Sports Ministry’s Special Investigation Unit had directed the Attorney General’s Department to file criminal charges against the former off-spinner.

Senanayake had made headlines in an ODI in England where he attempted a run-out at the non-striker’s end against Jos Buttler. Senanayake was also a T20 globetrotter of sorts as he played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He also played in the Big Bash League (BBL) for the Sydney Sixers.

Senanayake was difficult to pick because of his unconventional bowling action. When he played in the BBL. The commentators then called out for the inclusion of more Indian and Sri Lankan players in the league. When it comes to ODIs, he picked up 53 wickets at an average of 35.36. He had an economy of 4.77. In T20Is, he took 25 wickets at an average of 21.96. He had an economy rate of 6.78.
