In a recent event in Mumbai, Indian team cricket captain Rohit Sharma shed light on his leadership approach. He acknowledged the biggest challenge which is aligning the diverse perspectives of the team. He emphasized the importance of shared understanding in a team sport, highlighting the need for everyone to be “on the same page” to achieve collective success.

“It is probably the hardest job of the leader to get everyone to do what you want them to do. This is because they come with a different mindset and they want to do what they want. That is what we try and talk to everyone when they come in because it’s a team game and sport. What I try and do is to give the players that freedom and importance- that they are very important to me,” he said.

Sharma went on to mention his focus on empowering his teammates and fostering confidence. He understands that in high-pressure matches, all eleven players need to be mentally and emotionally equipped to perform at their peak. Building this would give individual and collective confidence becomes crucial for securing victories.

“It does not matter if you only play ten balls at No.6 and No.7 …you are so important to me that you can win games. It’s just building the confidence within themselves. Because you need all 11 of them to give their best. You need everyone to contribute to the team’s cause,” he added.

“If I am not available…”

Recognizing the potential discomfort in the absence of a leader, Sharma has revealed his unique strategy to connect with each player individually. He visits their rooms, shares meals, and actively engages in personal conversations. This fosters respect, clarifies individual roles within the team (crucial in modern cricket), and ultimately builds a strong foundation for collective success.

“I try and go to players’ rooms individually and talk to them, have dinner. They look up to the leaders. If I am not available to talk and give time to them then there will be some discomfort around the team. The most important thing is to try and treat everyone equally and give everyone that importance. Give them role clarity that what is their role,” Sharma said.

Rohit further highlighted the critical role of a captain in boosting player confidence, especially when facing the threat of being dropped. He recognizes that such anxieties can hinder performance, so he prioritizes personalized communication and reassurance. By understanding their concerns and reiterating their value to the team, he aims to rekindle their confidence and unlock their full potential.

“If they are having any thoughts about getting dropped that’s where my role comes in. Then I have to try and build the confidence. It’s about giving them that confidence and building that trust that no matter what my leader says I have to go and execute that. Those are the things that I try to focus on. It’s a tough job,” he said.
