Boucher emphasized that the decision was primarily driven by a desire to alleviate the captaincy burden from Rohit Sharma. He acknowledged Rohit’s immense contributions as captain, leading Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles, but also recognized the toll it had taken on the veteran batsman. “One thing I did pick up with Ro is that the captaincy can be quite demanding,” Boucher said. “He’s been doing it for a long time, and it can weigh you down, especially when you’re also leading India.”

Boucher also highlighted the opportunity to unleash Hardik Pandya’s full potential as a player. “We saw a window to get Hardik back as a player,” he explained. “He’s been struggling with injuries, but now he’s fit and firing. He is a Mumbai Indians boy. He went to another franchise, won the title in his first year, and ended up runner-up in his second year. So there’s some very good leadership skills as well.”

Boucher hinted at a larger vision behind the captaincy change, suggesting it might be the start of a transitional phase for Mumbai Indians. “It’s not just about the IPL 2024,” he clarified. “We’re building for the future, and we believe Hardik has the leadership qualities and temperament to be a long-term captain for the franchise.”
