India played against South Africa in their third match of the 20-20 World Cup on Sunday. While the match wasn’t a do-or-die situation for India like many other teams, it was still a game of great importance. South Africa are one of the strongest teams in the tournament and with a pacy attack featuring Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi they have the ability to trouble even the best batting lineup in the world.
India had hoped to pass the first proper test of the competition and lay a claim to the semi-final berth. It would however be safe to say that the Indian top order failed!
Coming onto open the innings Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul started off well albeit a little cautious but failed to build on their start. Rohit was the earliest to depart at an individual score of just 15 runs. KL Rahul also continued his bad form and went out at just 9 runs.
The in-form batter Virat Kohli also departed early after showing great touch and Deepak Hooda, the new entrant to the playing XI failed spectacularly then after. It was only the Nuber 2 T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav who faced the South Africa bowlers and came out on top. The right-hand batter made 68 runs in 40 balls and saved India from an embarrassingly low total.
With each failing wicket, the hopes of Pakistan were also diminishing as only an India win in the match would keep their hopes of Semi-final qualification alive. Both Indian and Pakistan fans on Twitter took to social media and shared memes to lessen the pain of sub-par performance.
In the end, India could only reach 133/9 in 20 overs on the back of an incredible knock from Suryakumar.
