India and Pakistan were at loggerheads recently over the hosting of Asia Cup 2023. The multi-nation tournament will be played in Pakistan this year.  Jay Shah had earlier said that India will not tour Pakistan for the Asia Cup. After that, Pakistan retaliated by saying that if India does not come to the Asia Cup then Pakistan will not come down and play the World Cup in India.

Now the General manager of the cricket governing body Wasim Khan has said that Pakistan will play their games outside India when the World Cup commences. One could assume that this was in reply to what India said about not coming to the Asia Cup to Pakistan. The Pakistan Cricket Board said that the games involving India could be held at a neutral venue.

Sri Lanka were the winners of the last Asia Cup edition in 2022

The neutral venue has not been zeroed in as yet. The options that are being explored as reported were, Sri Lanka, Oman, UAE and England. There will be a lot of travel and logistical hurdles involved if the tournament takes place. There will be a problem of broadcasting crew as well. Two broadcasting crews will be needed. One of them in Pakistan and one of them to cover India’s fixtures.

The upcoming Asia Cup will be held in the ODI format considering that this is a World Cup year. The last edition of the continental tournament took place in the UAE. Sri Lanka beat Pakistan in the final and were crowned champions. The last edition was held in the T20I format ahead of the 20-20 World Cup in Australia.

This year’s ODI World Cup will be held in India for the first time since 2011. India won the 50 over World Cup that year. The Men in Blue have had a trophy drought at World events in 2013. India have made it to the semi-finals of the 2015 World Cup in Australia and the 2019 World Cup in England. They will want to win the World Cup on home soil this year.
