The Team mentor of the Bangalore franchise Sania Mirza has joined the Bengaluru camp ahead of the Women’s Indian T20 League. Bengaluru will be on a mission to win the trophy in the inaugural season itself. The average age of the squad is on the higher side of 30 and the franchise has got in many former captains such as Ellyse Perry, Heather Knight, Dane van Niekerk and Smriti Mandhana herself.

Bengaluru may have ambitions to win the tournament in this edition or maybe the next edition itself. To make this a reality, they have called in Sania, who has been a champion for India in Tennis, and has been a former World no 1 for India in singles Tennis. Mirza also had a very accomplished career in doubles as well for India. Sania, apart from Tennis, also is good at swimming and cricket.

I have the experience of playing under pressure – Saina Mirza

The main reason behind bringing Sania to the Bengaluru fold is to help the young women cricketers representing the Bengaluru franchise have a champion mentality and also guide the young women cricketers on what they can do in pressure situations and also how they can be at their best at tight moments in a high-pressure game.

“This mentorship means a lot of fun as I love doing things that are challenging but also helping these young girls to adapt to the sports that I have been doing for the last 20 years. A lot of them have not seen that kind of spotlight ever, so will try to help them with my experience and give them my experience of how exactly feels to play under pressure and that has nothing to do with cricket and only has to do with the mental side of things, so I hope I can do that and help them grow faster and how to handle the pressure,” Sania said upon her appointment.

“No matter what sport you are from, but coming up as an elite and challenging the norms in terms of an athlete, wanting to embrace pressure and how to deal with it, and not be afraid of it, for women’s sport, Sania is a huge icon,” Mike Hesson talked about the appointment of Sania Mirza as Bengaluru’s mentor. Sania had earlier said her appointment had nothing to do with her cricket skills but it was to do with helping the Women cricketers with mental toughness.
