Emotional moments unfolded at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot shortly before the commencement of the third Test between India and England. Legendary India cricketer Anil Kumble presented Sarfaraz Khan with his Test cap just moments before captain Rohit Sharma headed to the pitch for the toss. As Kumble delivered a brief speech, accompanied by applause and cheers from the Indian team, Sarfaraz’s father, Naushad, standing on the sidelines, was visibly moved.

Immediately after receiving the cap from Kumble, Sarfaraz dashed towards his father. Tearful and overwhelmed, Naushad accepted the cap from his son, kissing its badge. It was the realization of a dream cherished by the father and achieved through years of dedication, perseverance, and numerous outstanding batting displays by his son. After this heart-warming scene, Sarfaraz gently wiped tears from his father’s cheek and embraced him tightly, showing remarkable composure despite the emotional moment.

Sarfaraz understood that this was just the beginning of his journey and there was much work ahead. After three remarkable Ranji Trophy seasons during which Sarfaraz consistently scored centuries and briefly challenged Don Bradman’s first-class average, he further impressed with a swashbuckling 150+ against the touring England Lions side while representing India A.

Sarfaraz averages 69.85 in first class

Sarfaraz’s exceptional record for Mumbai underscores his immense talent, displaying consistency in the Ranji Trophy. With 3912 runs from 45 first-class matches at an impressive average of 69.85, including 14 centuries and 11 fifties, he has established himself as a prolific batter. Additionally, his contributions to the India A team, notably scoring a fifty in the first unofficial Test and a remarkable 161 in the second, were instrumental in their series victory against the England Lions.

Ahead of the third match, Sarfaraz was summoned to the senior team following injuries to KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, who withdrew from the Vizag Test. Despite his call-up, the 26-year-old had to bide his time as Rajat Patidar was chosen for the match. However, with Virat Kohli and Rahul unavailable for the Rajkot fixture, the team management opted to grant Sarfaraz his opportunity, putting an end to his prolonged wait.
