In what will be heartbreak for Indian fans, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss part of the four-match Test Series in the Border Gavaskar Trophy in India. According to Espn Cricinfo Bumrah will also not be a part of the entire New Zealand series along with a couple of Tests against Australia. Bumrah’s name was also taken off after he was initially included in the ODI series against Sri Lanka.

It was done so after he experienced soreness in his back. He was added initially as per the recommendation of the staff at the National Cricket Academy. Bumrah was practising match stimulation and he had a great first day and cleared it, but the ace pacer complained of back issues when his workload was increased. Looking at the outcome, the staff took out his name from the Sri Lanka ODIs.

We need to be very careful with Jasprit Bumrah- Rohit Sharma

The right-arm pacer has to manage his workload carefully keeping the World Cup in mind, along with the Australia Tests and the Asia Cup. The NCA staff and the physios want to take things slow with Bumrah as they do not want a repeat of what happened in the 20-20 World Cup, where Bumrah played a couple of T20s against Australia after a long layoff only to have back problems again.

However, in all this, there is a silver lining, if things go in the right direction, Bumrah could end up playing in the last two Tests that will be held in Dharamshala and Ahmedabad, respectively in March. “After clearing those tests at the NCA last week, Bumrah had fresh bowling tests in Mumbai under the supervision of Nitin Patel, the head of NCA’s sports science wing and the final authority on a player’s fitness clearance. It was after those tests, combined with the scan results, that it was determined Bumrah would need more rehab time,” the report said.

“It’s an unfortunate incident with him [Bumrah]. The poor guy had been working very hard at the NCA all this time. Just when he got back to full fitness, he started bowling and everything, the last two days I think this incident happened where he felt a little bit of stiffness in his back. It’s nothing major, it’s just stiffness. [But] when Bumrah says anything we have to be very cautious about it. I thought it was important for us to make that decision then, to just pull him out. When we named him [in the squad], he was in the process of getting his workload done. We need to be very careful with him. He had a major injury before the [T20] World Cup. So we just need to be careful,” Rohit Sharma said ahead of the first ODI against Sri Lanka.
