Jasprit Bumrah to be rested from the ODI series against Sri Lanka – Reports

India’s pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, will not be part of the ODI series against Sri Lanka. This comes as a change in stance from the Indian Cricket Board who had earlier named him in the squad for the ODI series against the Islanders. The bowler has not played since September 2022. He missed the T20 series against South Africa and also the 20-20 World Cup in Australia.

Bumrah had earlier been added to the ODI squad against Sri Lanka on the advice of the selection committee. “The All-India Selection Committee has included pacer Jasprit Bumrah in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming Mastercard 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka,” an Indian Cricket Board statement read that was released earlier.

Now in a turn of events, the Indian Cricket Board has left out the right-arm pacer for the ODIs against Sri Lanka. The board does not want to play Bumrah as of now and the staff at the National Cricket Academy had cautioned Bumrah to ease into his workload and considering that the Australia series is coming up.

Reports have also emerged that Bumrah will be available for the ODIs against New Zealand ODI series that will take place after the Sri Lanka ODIs. from January 18. The Indian Cricket Board has not named anyone to replace Bumrah and no official communication regarding the same has been made.

The members of the Indian Team, apart from Bumrah have landed in Guwahati ahead of the ODI series against the men from the Emerald Isle. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer are already in Guwahati. This will be a three-match ODI series.

Bumrah has been plagued with a back injury on multiple occasions. Kapil Dev also mentioned in an interview that because of Bumrah’s unorthodox action, injuries are bound to happen and that his workload should be managed. India will want to keenly monitor Bumrah given that 2023 will be an ODI World Cup year.
