Iga Swiatek powers Poland into Quarterfinals of United Cup

Iga Swiatek won both of her games on the day.

Iga Swiatek’s fine form helped Poland to beat Spain to book a spot in the Quarterfinals of the ongoing United Cup. The star player was at her best and won both the games in the night which helped her side to proceed a step closer towards the title win. On the other hand, Australia stunned the defending champions USA with a shocking win to knock them out of the tournament.

Swiatek defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in straight sets and registered a 6-2, 6-1 win. She then teamed up with Hubert Hurkacz for the mixed doubles and beat their opponents 6-0, 6-0 in a 53-minute encounter, which could not get any one-sided. Earlier in the day, Hurkacz had lost to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina by a margin of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Poland finished Group A with a perfect 2-0 win and waited for the opponents in the Quarterfinals. Speaking about a perfect day she had in the middle, Iga said “It’s lessons for the future and great practice. I hardly ever play mixed. You use different skills; it’s about feeling the geometry of the court.” The 22-year-old was at her finest in the game against Spain and dominated the opponents with relative ease.

‘She carried me throughout the whole match’ – Hubert Hurkacz

While Iga flourished, Hurkacz did not have a good game. Right from the morning, the world no.9 struggled to get going. The Polish claimed that he was carried by Iga in the mixed doubles match and played some amazing shots. “She carried me throughout the whole match, in every game she was making amazing shots,” said Hurkacz after the match. Thankfully for Poland, they still ended up winning the match by a fair margin.

Australia on the other hand stunned the defending champions USA. The Australian side had to work hard which was expected and ended up on a winning side by winning 2 out of their 3 games. Alex De Minaur was the star of the match who beat Taylor Fritz in a crunch match.
