Aaron Finch, the Australian T20I skipper, has bid adieu from T20I cricket. In T20Is, Finch has done well as a skipper by leading Australia to its first 20-20 World Cup title in the UAE in 2021. He has had a wonderful T20I career, having scored 3120 runs at an average of 34.8 and a strike rate of 142.53. He has made 2 hundreds and 19 fifties in the shortest format.

Finch has led the Australian side for a long period and has captained the side in 76 men’s T20Is and also 55 ODIs. The right-hander represented Australia in 254 international games across all formats, playing five Tests, 146 ODIs and 103 T20Is. He ended his ODI career in 2022 but he continued playing T20Is. He proved unsuccessful in defending Australia’s 2021 T20 title.

“Realising that I won’t be playing on until the next T20 World Cup in 2024, now is the right moment to step down and give the team time to plan and build towards that event,” Cricket Governing body quoted Finch as saying at the MCG. “I also want to say a huge thank you to all the fans who have supported me throughout my international career”

Finch led Australia to a maiden 20-20 World Cup title in 2021

The 36-year-old was an ace at the white ball game, and in 2020 he was nominated for the Cricket Governing Body’s Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Decade award. “Team success is what you play the game for and the maiden T20 World Cup win in 2021 and lifting the ODI World Cup on home soil in 2015 will be the two memories I cherish the most. To be able to represent Australia for 12 years and play with and against some of the greatest players of all time has been an incredible honour,” Finch said.

Finch has two of the highest T20I scorers ever in the fast-flowing format. He made 172 off 76 balls against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2018 and he set the record for the highest T20I score. His innings comprised 16 fours and 10 sixes. He also scored 156 off 63 balls against England in 2013, which is the third-highest score in men’s T20Is.
