‘I was crying and people recognised me…’ – Wasim Akram recounts his wife’s tragic death story

Former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram is a cricketing icon in Pakistan. People would see him as a magician when he had the ball in his hand. Akram picked up 414 wickets in 104 Test matches at an economy rate of 2.59 for Pakistan.

In ODIs, he picked 502 wickets in 356 matches at an economy of 3.89. Akram was one of the greatest fast bowlers in Pakistan Cricket. Akram talked about an anecdote in his autobiography Sultan: A Memoir.

Akram, recently, opened up on the demise of his wife Huma and had a heart-touching tale to tell which was an anecdote about his deceased wife. Huma died of heart and kidney complications at the age of 42 in Chennai. Akram was travelling from Singapore to Lahore with the help of an air ambulance. His wife was due to get treated at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.

“The ambulance stopped at Chennai Airport for refuelling. I was flying to Singapore with my late wife and there was a stop in Chennai for refuelling. When he landed, she was unconscious. I was crying and people recognized me at the airport. We didn’t have an Indian visa. We both had Pakistani passports,” Akram told Sportsstar.

“The people at the Chennai airport, the security forces, and the customs and immigration officials told me not to worry about the visa and take my wife to the hospital while they sort the visa out. That is something I will never forget, as a cricketer and as a human being,”.

He said he was very moved by the incident and was very gratified by the actions taken.

Akram is still involved with the Pakistan Super League with the Karachi Kings. Karachi have not had the best of seasons in the PSL. Recently, the former left-arm pacer created a storm on social media as he was dissatisfied after Kings lost a thriller to the Multan Sultans. He was very angry and kicked a sofa in disgust. Akram is involved in the game as a commentator as well.
