Less than three weeks before their first game of IPL 2024, the Chennai Super Kings have been dealt a significant blow with the news that star opener Devon Conway will be sidelined until May due to a thumb injury. Conway sustained the injury during the recently concluded T20I series against Australia. He will now undergo surgery which is precisely why he will be out of the game for a while.

This absence comes as a major setback for CSK, who were heavily reliant on Conway‘s explosive batting at the top of the order. The left-hander enjoyed a phenomenal debut season in the IPL last year, amassing 672 runs across 16 matches at a staggering average of 51.69 and a strike rate of 139.71. His partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad at the top proved pivotal in CSK’s successful campaign, and his absence will leave a significant void in the batting lineup. The exact date of his return in May remains unclear. However, his extended absence throws the CSK management into a selection conundrum. Rachin Ravindra, who was bought at the auction for INR 1.8 Cr is likely to take Conway’s spot at the top of the order.

Conway will also miss the upcoming 2nd Test between New Zealand and Australia, having already missed the first game. Last week, his absence was felt as the Kiwis were thrashed by the visitors. Will Young, who opened the batting in Conway’s absence was unable to make substantial contributions in either of the two innings.

NZ keep fingers crossed with T20 World Cup around the corner!

Conway’s injury also raises concerns about his availability for the upcoming T20 World Cup, which commences in June. While the timeframe for his return suggests he might be fit in time for the mega event, his lack of match practice leading up to the tournament could be a concern for the New Zealand team management.

The coming weeks will be crucial for both CSK and the New Zealand cricket team as they monitor Conway’s progress and determine the best course of action for his return to competitive cricket.
