The 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup is slated for June and will be co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States. It kicks off on June 1 (June 2 IST) in Dallas with a match between hosts USA and Canada. The final is set for June 29 at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. India begins their campaign on June 5 against Ireland, with a high-stakes clash against Pakistan on June 9 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

With over three months remaining until the commencement of the T20 World Cup 2024, the Indian Cricket Board secretary Jay Shah, speaking at an event in Rajkot on Wednesday (February 14) ahead of the third Test between India and England, officially announced Rohit Sharma as India’s captain for the tournament. Shah expressed confidence in Sharma’s leadership, anticipating that the Men in Blue would secure the title under his guidance.

“We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But we won hearts thereby winning 10 matches in a row. I would like to say that I am confident that India will lift the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at Barbados,” Shah said.

Hardik Pandya to be vice-captain

Jay Shah elaborated on the shortage of options for the T20I captaincy following Hardik Pandya’s injury during the World Cup. He even reaffirmed Pandya’s role as Rohit’s deputy. Stressing Rohit’s leadership prowess, Shah underscored the captain’s capability to steer the team through difficult situations, as evidenced during the Afghanistan series.

“Hardik Pandya will definitely be the vice-captain. When Hardik was injured in the World Cup, who else can we give the captaincy? In the third T20I against Afghanistan, India was 22/4 and the way Rohit Sharma took the team to 212/4, we can’t question much about him, right? He has the ability, as I said, we won ten games in the ODI World Cup. We didn’t win the final, but it’s part and parcel of the game. Whoever plays better, wins,” said Shah.
