When it comes to Women’s cricket, it got a major shot in the arm on the back of a very successful season of the Women’s Indian Premier League. The Mumbai Indians were crowned the inaugural winners of the WPL. The tournament was a rousing success in India and also garnered a lot of attention all over the world because of the auction process that took place in the WPL.

Following its success, the Big 3, that is the Indian Cricket Board, England Cricket Board and Australia are planning to pilot the inaugural edition of a Women’s  T20 Champions League in 2024. There was a Men’s tournament that was played some years back but it had to be shelved after some time due to a massive drop in interest and also because of its sustainability in the long term. The Boards at present are very upbeat about the concept and want the tournament to make a foray into Women’s cricket.

As per discussions, the venues will be rotated between the Big 3 boards if the tournament is played

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, CA chief executive and chairman, Nick Hockley and Mike Baird, have had discussions on the matter with their counterparts at the Indian Cricket Board and at England Cricket Board. The talks on the matter took place during the World Test Championship (WTC) final where Australia hammered India by 209 runs. Then a second round of talks took place at the Cricket Governing Body’s annual conference in Durban, South Africa.

As per the discussions, franchises from the WPL, the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and Hundred from England will reportedly play in the tournament. According to the initial rounds of talks the Boards have come to an understanding that they would most probably look to rotate the venues where the tournament will be played. When it comes to the moolah that will be racked in the financial gains like gate revenue and corporate hospitality will be in the hands of the host nation that is hosting the tournament in the cycle.

If this happens, this will be a big step in Women’s cricket after the decision that was made regarding equal payouts when it comes to World events for both Men and Women. All these signs are looking ominous for Women’s cricket to bloom and become bigger than ever before.
