Nathan Lyon is ruled out due to a calf injury of the remaining three Ashes Tests. Lyon came out to bat even with injury and scored a vital 4 off 13 balls for the Kangaroos. He hit one boundary in his innings. When Lyon walked out to bat, he was given a standing ovation by the members at Lords through the long room and even in the stands. Now with Lyon playing no further part in the Tests, it is likely that Todd Murphy will come in.

Lyon has thrown his weight behind Murphy and said that he has got the calibre to deliver the goods as Murphy looks to take responsibility in Australia’s spin department in place of Lyon. Murphy had a very impressive debut in India in February at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The off-spinner was the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the series as he scalped 14 in 4 games at an average of 25.21.

Todd Murphy is going to be a different challenge for the England batters- Nathan Lyon

The two have been working together and Murphy has been asking Lyon a lot of questions as to how can he get better with his game. ‘His stock ball is good enough in international cricket. We have seen that in India in arguably the hardest place to bowl spin,’ Lyon said. ‘It will be a different challenge with the England batters, ‘If they do come at him, it provides Todd with a decent challenge. But a chance to leave his footmarks here in England. It is a big Ashes series, he is excited by the opportunity.’ Lyon added.

Lyon said he has not yet decided whether he will remain in England with the Australian side or go back home to work on his rehab. Ricky Ponting has said on air on Day 5 that Lyon could remain in England just to coach and help Murphy. ‘I have told him my phone is always on, it doesn’t matter if I am sitting in the changeroom with him or I am sitting at home watching it in bed.’ Lyon said if Murphy had to ask doubts.

Lyon had said that one injury is just a small bump on the road and that he will get back on the cricket field very soon. ‘This is just a little speed bump on the road. This isn’t career-defining. I am hungrier than ever to get back out there.’ The 35-year-old said. The Third Test will be held at Leeds in Headingley.
