In what could be a game-changer for Indian cricket, reports state that the Indian Cricket Board is set to launch a country-wide talent hunt to discover young fast bowlers for the future. The Indian side had a fast-bowling revolution under Virat Kohli’s captaincy as he made sure that fast bowlers be given priority in Indian cricket. The Indian Premier League (IPL) has also given a lot of new fast bowlers such as the likes of Umran Malik, Moshin Khan, Akash Madhwal and others.

While the IPL has given a lot of options in terms of fast bowling, the Indian Cricket Board is looking at widening the pool and so it has come up with this step. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) also tried a concept called hinterland scouting where they picked up fast bowlers from Jammu and Kashmir by looking at their videos. The likes of Avinash Singh and Himanshu Sharma were a part of this exercise. While they could not get a game for the franchise in IPL 2023, they could play for RCB in future.

Zaheer Khan lauded MRF pace foundation for his growth as a fast bowler

The other measures that the Indian Cricket Board have taken in terms of fast bowling have been the establishment of the Madras Rubber Factory (MRF) pace foundation where emerging young talents were trained under the tutelage of Dennis Lillee earlier and Glenn McGrath at present.  McGrath in an interview had once revealed that Ankit Rajput and Ashwin Crist were fast bowlers to watch out for.

The likes of Zaheer Khan have talked about the MRF pace foundation on Breakfast with Champions. Zaheer said that the pace foundation helped him to clock at higher speeds and bulk up in weight. It remains to be seen whether the talent hunt that would be undertaken by the Indian Cricket Board would prove to be successful. Fast bowlers have shown their worth around the world and have made teams stronger, so the Indian management wants to try and make use of the talent hunt to increase the fast-bowling reserves in the country.
