In the 15th match of the ODI World Cup 2023, the Netherlands beat South Africa by 38 runs to stop their winning chariot in the ongoing tournament. In the rain-interrupted game, the Dutch bowlers stole the show after a great batting performance from skipper Scott Edwards. He scored a brilliant half-century and helped his team post a competitive total.

Earlier, after winning the toss, South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma opted to field first. His decision went well with the team, as the Dutch batters failed to put up a show. The team lost seven wickets for a mere 140 runs, and their innings looked derailed. However, Edwards, along with Roelof Van der Merwe, added 64 runs for the eighth wicket.

Van der Merwe, in his inning, scored 29 runs off 19 balls with the help of three fours and a six. After his departure, Edwards continued his aggressive batting approach. He added 41 runs for the ninth wicket with Aryan Dutt and helped the Netherlands post a competitive total. Dutt, in his inning, scored an unbeaten 23 runs off nine balls with the help of three sixes.

Meanwhile, Edwards scored 78 runs off 69 balls with the help of 10 fours and a six. South African pacers Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada, and Marco Jansen clinched two wickets each. On the other hand, spinners Keshav Maharaj and Gerald Coetzee clinched a wicket each.

South African batters choked against Dutch bowlers

Chasing a competitive total, South Africa had the worst possible start. They lost four wickets for a mere 44 runs and let the game drift away from their hands. Edwards’ strategy to start with leg spinner Colin Ackermann proved monumental for the Netherlands as he removed wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock for a mere 20 runs.

Following this, Van der Merwe clinched two wickets for Temba Bavuma and Rassie Van der Dussen. Soon, South Africa was crumbling at 44/4 in 11.2 overs. However, middle-order batters Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller tried to rescue their team and added 45 runs for the fifth wicket. Klassen, in his innings, scored 28 runs off 28 balls with the help of four boundaries.

On the other hand, Miller, in his inning, scored 43 runs off 52 balls with the help of four fours and a six. When the duo looked dangerous, Dutch pacer Logan Van Beek dismissed both of them and ensured their victory in the game. Ultimately, Keshav Maharaj’s 40-run knock failed to propel South Africa to victory. The team fell 38 runs short of the target and lost the game.

Meanwhile, Logan Van Beek clinched three wickets for the Netherlands, while Paul Van Meekeren, Roelof Van der Merwe, and Bas de Leede took two wickets each. Colin Ackermann got one crucial wicket from Quinton de Kock, while Aryan Dutt remained wicketless. With the Netherlands’ victory, Sri Lanka is the only team to win a game in the ongoing tournament.
