After the riveting action in the 20-20 World Cup 2022, international cricket resumed with Australia vs England ODI series on Thursday. The first match of the three-match series was being played at Adelaide Oval. Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss and put the World Champions England to the test against their bowling in their own backyard.
England openers Jason Roy and Philip Salt walked out to open the innings. Australia stuck early as Mitchell Starc cleaned up Jason Roy in the fourth over leaving England 18/1. Captain Cummins also struck giving England their second blow by dismissing Jason Roy in the fifth over. England lost both their openers on the score of 20. Cummins further gave third blow to England as he removed James Vince on the score of 31.
After the leading seamers, Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa got into the act and dismissed Sam Billings and Jos Buttler respectively as England lost half their side on 118. Seeing his side in trouble, Dawid Malan held the England innings together scoring a magnificent 134 off 128 balls to take England to 287/9 after their allotted 50 overs. Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa picked up three wickets each for Australia.
In reply to England’s total, Australian openers Travis Head and David Warner added 147 runs for the first wicket. England got their first success as Chris Jordan removed Travis Head for 69 off 57 balls. Warner continued his brilliant innings at the other end with his eyes set on a hundred.
However, the southpaw was left 14 runs short of the landmark as he was dismissed by David Willey for 86 leaving Australia at 200/2. After losing Warner, Steve Smith took the innings forward with his brilliant knock making sure that there were no hiccups in the chase. Smith scored an unbeaten 80 off 78 balls as Australia chased down the target with 19 balls to spare in their innings. Dawid Malan was awarded ‘Player of the Match’ for his magnificent hundred which took England out of trouble in the first innings. Australia went 1-0 up in the three-match series, with the second ODI scheduled to be played at Sydney on 19th Nov starting at 8:50 am(IST).
