The fourth day of the fifth Test between India and West Indies saw some intense action between the two sides. Rain played its part in the day. But there was enough action between the bat and the ball. Mohammad Siraj claimed his first five-wicket haul in West Indies at the start of the day and reduced the home side to a first-innings total of 255.
A lead of 183 runs was very handy for the visiting side. But with rain having its say on the match and not much time left in the game, India needed to add some quick runs to their innings. The intent was visible from the Indian opening pair. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal started to take on the bowlers right from the first over. India had a clear plan for the second innings.
As the openers were undone by the West Indian bowlers, naturally Virat Kohli was expected to enter the middle. But to everyone’s surprise, in walked the wicketkeeper batter, Ishan Kishan. The Southpaw was promoted up the order to score quick runs. The young batter did exactly that, as he scored 52 runs in 34 deliveries, which included 4 boundaries and 2 sixes. It helped India to score 181 runs in just 24 overs and declare their innings quickly.
It was the first fifty of Ishan Kishan in his Test career. The wicketkeeper batter impressed everyone with his aggressive batting. Towards the end of the day, West Indies saw themselves at 76/2. Talking about his batting in the second innings and the thought process behind his promotion, Kishan revealed that Virat Kohli was behind Kishan’s promotion to number 4.
The 25-year-old said “It was Virat bhai who took the initiative and told me that I should go in. There was a slow left-arm bowler who was bowling. It was a good call for the team. Sometimes you need to take those calls” and credited the former Indian captain for promoting him up the order.
Here’s how the fans reacted to Kishan’s comments –
