In a flurry of activity that has gripped the cricketing world today, all ten IPL franchises have revealed their retention lists for the upcoming season. While some of the decisions were anticipated, there were also plenty of surprises thrown into the mix.

The defending champions, Chennai Super Kings, have released a group of notable players ahead of the upcoming IPL season. Among those departing are Ben Stokes, Sisanda Magala, Kyle Jamieson, Dwayne Pretorius, Bhagath Varma, Subhranshu Senapati, Akash Singh, and Ambati Rayudu. While Stokes has opted out of IPL 2024 for personal reasons, Rayudu had already announced his retirement from all forms of cricket before this year’s IPL Final.

The Gujarat Titans have bid farewell to eight players, including Yash Dayal, KS Bharat, Shivam Mavi, Urvil Patel, Pradeep Sangwan, Odean Smith, Alzarri Joseph, and Dasun Shanaka. In one of the biggest trades in the history of the game, Hardik Pandya, GT’s captain, has been traded to the Mumbai Indians.

The Rajasthan Royals have released a noteworthy group of players ahead of the upcoming IPL season, including Joe Root (who had pulled out), Jason Holder, Obed McCoy, Murugan Ashwin, and KC Cariappa. Surprisingly, they have retained the services of Navdeep Saini, who has not been in great form in recent times.

Major surprises in the squad lists for IPL 2024

The Punjab Kings have demonstrated their confidence in their pricey pick-up, Sam Curran, despite numerous reports indicating his release. However, they have parted ways with two notable players: Shahrukh Khan and Bhanuka Rajapaksa. While their patience with Shahrukh may have dwindled, Rajapaksa’s release could be due to an overabundance of similar players in the team.

The Kolkata Knight Riders have undergone a significant overhaul, releasing 12 players, including notable names like Tim Southee, Litton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, Johnson Charles, David Wiese, Lockie Ferguson, and Umesh Yadav. This move signals the team’s intention to rebuild their bowling attack, relying on young talents like Vaibhav Arora and Harshit Rana. Despite speculations surrounding the release of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, KKR has opted to retain their experienced veterans. Surprisingly, they have also decided to keep Rahmanullah Gurbaz, a decision that has raised eyebrows among fans and experts.

In a surprising turn of events, Sunrisers Hyderabad have released Harry Brook, for whom they spent a significant amount in the previous auction. They have also parted ways with Kartik Tyagi and Vivrant Sharma, both of whom are considered promising young talents. However, they have expressed their confidence in Mayank Agarwal, Abdul Samad, and Umran Malik, retaining them for the upcoming season.

The Lucknow Supergiants have kept their core group intact, releasing only eight players. Daniel Sams, Jaydev Unadkat, Manan Vohra, and Karun Nair are among those who have been released. Ahead of retention day, there was a rumour that KL Rahul was being traded to the Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, the retention list has confirmed that this was just a rumour.

Royal Challengers Bangalore have made some bold decisions ahead of the upcoming IPL season, releasing notable players like Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel, Finn Allen, and Josh Hazlewood, while retaining Dinesh Karthik, Mahipal Lomror, and Reece Topley

Echoing Royal Challengers Bangalore’s active approach, the Delhi Capitals also had a whirlwind day, releasing a total of 11 players. Among the notable departures were Rilee Rossouw, Phil Salt, Rovman Powell, Manish Pandey, and Sarfaraz Khan. Despite their struggles with consistency, the Capitals have opted to retain opener Prithvi Shaw for the time being.

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians have also bid farewell to 11 players, including Jofra Archer, for whom they had demonstrated considerable patience. Tristan Stubbs, Duan Jansen, Riley Meredith, Jhye Richardson, and Chris Jordan are the other foreign players who have been released. They have however welcomed back Hardik Pandya as mentioned earlier.
