IPL 2023 was a mixed bag for young Afghan wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz of KKR. In a recent change of events, the IPL 2023 champion captain, MS Dhoni, delivered the young batter a wonderful gift. Gurbaz recently shared pictures of himself on Instagram holding a personalised number 7 CSK jersey that was reportedly gifted to him by MS Dhoni, according to the description in the young player’s post.

With a 39-ball 81 against Gujarat Titans on Saturday at the Eden Gardens, Rahmanullah Gurbaz of Kolkata Knight Riders set the record for the highest IPL (Indian Premier League) score by an Afghan player. Gurbaz, who opened the batting for KKR in Jason Roy’s place, was aggressive in his treatment of the Titans’ bowlers, surpassing the previous record of 57 that he had set against RCB earlier in the season.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz was brought into KKR from GT prior to IPL 2023

The right-handed batter started things off by hammering the opposition’s captain Hardik Pandya for two sixes in the second over. Competing against his fellow countrymen Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad, the 21-year-old was successful. Eventually, Gurbaz mistimed a low full-toss from Ahmad and was caught by Rashid at deep mid-wicket. Before the current season, Gurbaz, who was transferred from the Titans to KKR, destroyed a defenseless Titans bowling unit with five fours and seven sixes.

Speaking of MS Dhoni, he finished the year with a record-tying fifth championship for Chennai Super Kings. There was a lot of talk that MS Dhoni might retire after the IPL 2023 season. The 41-year-old, who defeated Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2023 final, said something different during the post-game presentation.

“Looking for an answer? Circumstantially if you see this is the best time for me to announce retirement. But the amount of love and affection that I have been shown, wherever I have been this year…I think the easy thing for me to say would be to say ‘Thank you very much’, but the tough thing for me would be to work hard for nine months and come back and play at least one more season of IPL. But a lot depends on the body. It would take 6-7 months to decide. It will be more like a gift from my side. It’s not easy for me but the way they have shown their love and affection, that’s something that I need to do,” he said at the post-match presentation.
