India appears to be facing an uphill task in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021- 23 final at The Oval. Chasing a mammoth target of 444 set by Australia, India, in the second innings, ended Day 4 at  164-3. Going into the final day on Sunday, the batters on the crease, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane will feel that the first hour would decide the fate for the rest of the day.

Skipper Rohit Sharma fell to Nathan Lyon after making 43 off 60 balls with seven fours and one six. Shubman Gill did not last long as he departed for 18 off 19 balls to Scott Boland. Cheteshwar Pujara was not in his best form as he fell to Pat Cummins for just 27 off 47 balls.

The only positive for India is that Virat Kohli is batting on an unbeaten 44 off 60 balls with seven fours. Ajinkya Rahane is partnering him and he is unbeaten on 20 off 59 balls with three fours. India need to bat out three sessions to draw the game and they need a further 280 runs to win. Speaking on the same Mohammed Shami said that the Indian team has full belief in chasing down the target. This response sparked reactions from fans as they felt Shami was speaking in an overconfident manner.

We will come together to win the match: Mohammed Shami

“One hundred per cent everyone believes that tomorrow we will win the match,” Shami said on Saturday while speaking with the media in the indoor nets of The Oval’s Bedser Stand. “We always fight, we perform well around the world. So we believe and we will all come together to win this match.” Shami added. On the run chase, he talked about how India can pace their innings.

“If you bat well, 280 runs is not a big score. So I think you should bat normally as a Test match; focus on playing ball by ball. You should not look at the long target. When you keep small goals and targets, you will get more success.,” The India pacer said. Notably, Shami has the highest score of 56 in Test cricket for India. In 2021 he helped India come back in the Lord’s Test with his batting heroics.

Australia landed further punches on the Indian bowling attack in the second innings.   They had a 173-run lead from the first innings. The Kangaroos then scored 270-8 in the second innings on the back of Alex Carey’s unbeaten 66 off 105 balls which had eight fours. Marnus Labuschagne also made 41 off 126 balls with four fours. Mitchell Starc also showed what he could do with the bat. The left-hander hit a timely 41 off 57 balls studded with seven fours.
