Shubman Gill has been a champion and an in-form player in the ODI format for India. The man from Punjab has scored 1274 runs in ODIs for the national side. He has an average of 67.05 and a startling strike rate of 108.42. The right-handed batter has four hundreds and five fifties in ODIs. The 23-year-old has five fifties and four hundreds in the 50-over format.

However, in the second ODI against Australia, his form deserted him. He perished for a two-ball duck. Starc bowled a full ball wide of off stump and Gill chased the ball with hard hands. The ball went off the outer half of the bat and straight into the bucket hands of Marnus Labuschagne at backward point.

Gill scored 20 off 32 balls in the first ODI at the Wankhede in Mumbai

In the first ODI as well, Gill did not trouble the scorers. He fell for just 20 off 31 balls with three fours. Starc and Labuschagne had combined to remove him in Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium as well.

The Australia series has been up and down for Gill, so far. The opener did not play in the first two Tests against Australia. When he replaced KL Rahul at Indore, the top-order batter could not make his presence felt.

Gill made 21 off 18 in the first innings with three fours. In the second innings, he made a laborious 5 off 15. The conditions in Indore demanded a lot of grit and Gill failed to take off straight away. However, things changed for him at Ahmedabad. The pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium had provided the best batting conditions in the whole series. Gill stood tall against the Australian’s and made it count.

The Kangaroos had made 480 in the first innings. Gill led the Indian reply with a stellar knock of 128 off 235 balls with 12 fours and one six. This was his second century in Test match cricket. The hundred was also his first one at home. Gill would be thinking that he missed out at Vishakhapatnam.
