With the return of big names like Pat Cummins, Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc, Australia have announced their full 18-member squad for the ODI series against India, starting on September 22. Power-hitting all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who was ruled out of the ongoing South Africa tour with an injury, will also make a comeback in the three-match series. The first ODI will begin on September 22 in Mohali, while Indore and Rajkot will host the next two matches on September 24 and 27, respectively.
The series will be crucial for both teams as they enter the ODI World Cup a week later, taking place across various states in India. The premier 50-over tournament will begin on October 5 in Ahmedabad, while India and Australia will face each other in Chennai on October 8 to kick off their campaign. As a final preparation step, both teams will aim for a positive outing in the upcoming bilateral series.
While Marnus Labuschagne, who staged an impressive performance against the Proteas, earned a place in the squad, Travis Head’s exclusion after sustaining a wrist injury has become a massive setback for the Kangaroos. The Aussie opener reportedly suffered a fractured left arm during the fourth ODI against South Africa at Centurion. While Head’s participation in the World Cup is in serious doubt, Labuschagne, who has not been named in Australia’s 15-man squad, has a great chance to prove the selectors wrong.
Adam Zampa and Tanveer Sangha are the two spinners. Nathan Ellis and Spencer Johnson have also been added to the squad to join the pace attack. Meanwhile, Ashton Agar will miss the series due to the birth of his first child.
