Virat Kohli becomes the latest victim of Deepfake Technology

The dual nature of technological advancements has presented both benefits and drawbacks to society, particularly evident in the widespread misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in recent times. Renowned India cricketer Virat Kohli has fallen victim to the latest iteration of Deepfake Technology, wherein his counterfeit voice is being exploited to endorse a betting application. A video advertisement promoting substantial returns on investments has rapidly circulated across social media platforms, purportedly featuring Kohli.

To enhance the credibility of the advertisement, the perpetrators ingeniously inserted a segment featuring a prominent television journalist. Hence, creating the illusion of it being broadcast during a live news program. The advertisement alleges that Kohli generated INR 81,000 in just three days by investing a mere INR 1,000. Subsequently, the scammers seamlessly integrated a clip from Kohli’s renowned interview with Graham Bensinger, manipulating the cricketer’s authentic voice to synchronize with a fabricated message using advanced technology.
